At LumiNest Childcare, the health and safety of children, families, and staff is our top priority. To maintain a safe and healthy environment, we follow strict illness and communicable disease guidelines designed to minimize the spread of infections.
Daily Health & Safety Practices
- Handwashing: Children and staff wash hands frequently, especially before eating, after outdoor play, and after washroom use.
- Respiratory etiquette: Children are encouraged to cover coughs and sneezes.
- Cleaning & sanitizing: Toys, high-touch surfaces, and materials are disinfected daily.
- Ventilation: Indoor areas are well-ventilated.
- Health checks: Children are visually screened for signs of illness at drop-off.
When to Keep Your Child at Home
Children must stay home if they have any of the following symptoms:
- Fever (100°F / 38°C or higher)
- Vomiting or diarrhea (must be symptom-free for 48 hours before returning)
- Persistent cough, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
- Severe sore throat or difficulty swallowing
- Pink eye with discharge
- Undiagnosed rash or skin infection
- Unusual urine/stool color, or unexplained pain
- Any suspected communicable illness (e.g., flu, COVID-19, chickenpox)
Return to Care
A child may return when:
- They are symptom-free for at least 24 hours (48 hours for vomiting/diarrhea)
- They can comfortably participate in daily activities
- If required, a doctor’s note confirms the child is not contagious
Communicable Disease Protocols
- Families will be notified if multiple cases of illness occur.
- Public Health will be contacted if a reportable illness (e.g., COVID-19, measles, norovirus) is confirmed.
- Extra cleaning and safety measures may be put in place during outbreaks.
- Families will always be informed while protecting the privacy of affected children.
Family Partnership
- A copy of this policy is provided upon enrollment.
- Parents are encouraged to notify us promptly if their child is unwell or has been exposed to a contagious illness.
- Open communication ensures we can work together to keep all children safe.
